Halloween Party Cleaning Checklist: Before and After the Guests

This Halloween party cleaning checklist covers what to clean before guests arrive and how to reset your house the morning after. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so a lot of families are hosting.

A Halloween party should be fun. Nobody wants to spend Sunday scraping candy off the floor and pulling fake cobwebs off the couch.

The trick is simple. Clean the right rooms before, set up a few things for party night, and follow a short reset the next morning. This is the same plan I use when I help families get ready to host.

A week before the party

  1. Dust before you decorate. Do the mantel, shelves, and side tables first. Once the pumpkins and ghosts go up, it is hard to clean around them.
  2. Deep clean the guest bathroom. Every guest will use it. Scrub the sink, toilet, and floor, and shine the mirror.
  3. Make room in the fridge. Toss old food and wipe the shelves, so drinks and party trays have a home.
  4. Vacuum and mop the main floor. Wash or shake out the entry rugs too.
  5. Put away breakables. Move anything you do not want bumped, spilled on, or picked up.
  6. Plan where coats and bags will go. Clear part of a closet or set up a spot on a bed.

What guests notice first at a Halloween party

Guests only use a few rooms. Put your time there first.

  • The guest bathroom. People in costume check their makeup in the mirror all night. Make sure the mirror is clean and the light is bright. Put out dark or old hand towels, because face paint and fake blood will end up on them.
  • The entryway. Fall leaves and mud come in on shoes. Put a mat outside and another one inside the door.
  • The kitchen and snack table. Clear the counters so there is room for food and drinks.
  • Smells. Empty the trash, run the garbage disposal with water, and scoop the litter box if you have cats.

The day before

  • Wipe the kitchen counters, sink, and stovetop.
  • Give the guest bathroom a quick wipe and add extra toilet paper where people can see it.
  • Vacuum the entry and the rooms guests will use.
  • Take out all the trash and recycling.
  • Empty the dishwasher and run it, so you start party day with clean dishes.
  • Clear the coat spot.

Party night: set up a spill kit

Something will spill. That is just Halloween. Keep a small basket where you can grab it fast:

  • Paper towels and a few clean white cloths
  • Dish soap
  • A spray bottle of plain water
  • An old gift card or plastic scraper for candy and wax
  • A lint roller for glitter
  • Extra trash bags

A few more things that help a lot:

  • Put trash cans where people can see them. Drop a spare bag in the bottom of each can, so the next one is ready.
  • Start with an empty dishwasher. Dirty plates go straight in, not into a pile in the sink.
  • Set out coasters. Cold drinks leave water rings on wood.
  • Keep red drinks near hard floors. Punch and red wine are much easier to clean off tile than carpet.
  • If something spills on carpet, blot. Do not rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper.

For candle wax, fake blood, or face paint, follow my step by step guide on how to remove Halloween stains.

Halloween decorations that are safe and easy to clean

  • Use battery candles near costumes. Capes, long sleeves, and paper decorations can catch fire. Battery candles also mean no wax to clean up.
  • Keep fake cobwebs off couches and rugs. The stretchy webs leave fibers that are hard to pull out of fabric.
  • Take outdoor webs down after Halloween. Birds and small animals can get caught in them.
  • Keep glitter decorations in one spot. Glitter travels. A lint roller picks it up better than a broom.
  • Put a tray under real pumpkins. Pumpkins leak as they get soft and can stain wood and stone. My guide to pumpkin carving without the mess has more tips.

The morning after: a 30 minute reset

Set a timer and work through this list. You will be done before your coffee gets cold.

TaskTime
Gather all trash and recycling and take it out5 minutes
Cups, plates, and dishes into the dishwasher5 minutes
Wipe the counters, snack table, and sticky spots5 minutes
Check floors and carpet for spills, candy, and wax5 minutes
Quick wipe of the guest bathroom5 minutes
Vacuum the entry and the main room5 minutes

Then put your feet up. The bigger jobs, like washing towels and tablecloths, can wait until later in the day.

If hosting is a lot this year, I can help. I offer one time house cleaning in New Lenox and nine nearby towns. Book a clean the week before the party, or the Monday after, and let me handle the sticky floors. Call or text me early, because fall weekends fill up fast.

Thanksgiving is about four weeks after Halloween. When you are ready, my Thanksgiving cleaning checklist picks up right where this one ends.
